About the translation

The continuing keen interest in Roháček's translation of the Bible has become a remarkable phenomenon in Slovak biblical scholarship. The translation was successively published in print, first between 1910 and 1936, and the author's revised text was published in 1951. The question remains as to how it is that a text which makes considerable demands on the reader, not only by its old, grammatically different Slovak, but also by the translator's peculiar terminology, is still so popular today that readers demand further editions.

Roháček's translation shows, at first, a deep reverence for the Bible as the Word of God. The Bible gives us the very words of God, and it is therefore essential to express ourselves even in translation in a style that preserves as faithfully as possible the meaning and solemnity of the original words of the original. Since the Bible was first written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, the translator adapts his expression to these languages. Hence, a characteristic feature of Joseph Roháček's work is the "reign of the original". The attempt to translate into Slovak, as far as possible, all the individual words of the original in the same Slovak expressions has resulted in Roháček's translation being considerably concordant. Where the necessary Slovak terms are missing, the translator has often created his own words, which are not even found in the historical Slovak dictionary. Understandably, this does not only arouse admiration. But those who take the trouble to enter into his language and thought will gain access to a translation that will bring them closer to the Hebrew style of expression. It is good that, by God's grace, we have several translations of the Bible in English, and it is good that alongside these there will continue to be the opportunity to "read the little Horn."
